working

As an artist working in wood, my main focus is on discovering and revealing the beauty and intelligence that is hidden within the tree. For me, a piece that is designed well and built masterfully, that exposes the figure and retains the natural edges, conveys information and meaning that can help humans appreciate the amazing beauty of trees and better understand the world we live in.  Perhaps it can even help us find our true place in this world.

My studies of the human body and of music inform my woodworking. For instance, I often design with the question: 'How would I feel standing next to/sitting on this piece of furniture?' And sometimes I organize the spacing of shelves in a bookcase according to a polyrhythmic musical formula. Proportion, balance, and variation are key concerns in furniture design, as they are in music and in life.
